Joe's Italian Marketplace.started
out in 1978 as a small butcher shop and delicatessen. Our father,
Giuseppe Zaccheo, was working as a butcher for a major supermarket
chain. He was fifty-one years old when he decided to leave his secure
position to try it out on his own.
Our
parents dug deep into their pockets and purchased the space where
Joe's Meat Market & Delicatessen would be. Renovations took place
over that summer. Joe's Meat & Deli officially opened in August 1978.
From its infancy we strived to carry only top shelf items. The butcher
department was stocked with prime cuts of beef, pork, lamb, veal and
chickens. The chickens were Paramount whose quality surpassed those
others on the market at that time. The deli department carried quality
Boar's Head products and old favorites such as MotherGoose liverwurst.
In an effort to get the best quality product to their customers our
parents began investigating getting a fuller line of imported Italian
products to their customers. This entailed traveling to Queens and
Brooklyn to pick up the items customers looked for. The companies
based in those boroughs did not make deliveries all the way 'up-state'.
Our mother learned how to make fresh mozzarella from a cousin who
had a deli in Brooklyn. She has been making delicious, creamy mozzarella
ever since! With the expansion of products came the expansion of physical
space. This growth was in part due to the increased demands for more
products. Our catering department also grew to include offerings of
cold cut platters, hot and cold entrees made with our mother Angela's
homestyle recipes and the ever-popular 3, 4 or 6ft. hero.
After
ten years my father sought to transplant the business to another area.
In 1987, Joe's Meat and Deli opened in Fishkill. The business continued
to grow over the next ten years. My brothers, Vinnie and Carlo, took
bigger roles in the operation and management of the business. New
products were constantly introduced. The catering menu was expanded.
Joe's was always willing to go the extra step to insure customer satisfaction.
To this end, Vinnie and Carlo furthered their search for more product.
As a result, top sellers were imported pastas and other specialty
items from around the world.
Sadly,
in 1996 our father passed away. My brothers chose to continue in the
business started by our father for us. To that end, my brothers recreated
Joe's Meat & Deli into Joe's Italian Marketplace. This new establishment
bears their mark in presenting new and exciting products to their
customers while remaining true to our father's vision of providing
quality products and excellent service for his customers. The meats
and chickens are naturally bred to meet the demands of a health conscious
customer. The product line has been expanded to include many gourmet
items such as aged 6 to 45 year old Balsamic vinegars, extra virgin
olive oils and imported cheeses and olives. Our catering offers a
sophisticated variety of entrees, appetizers and hor'dorves.
Through
all these changes over the years there are some things that still
hold true. It is the hard work ethic and high standards that our parents
brought to the business that continues to be the hallmark of Joe's
Italian Marketplace. Hard work in bringing the best product to our
customers in an environment that is warm and friendly. High standards
of continually searching for products that reflect good taste and
good eating.
